A Great Time at the Hall – Sarah B – October 2024
We had a great time staying at Colleton Hall as a 4-generational family celebrating my 60th birthday, taking over the house and the East Wing.
The house is beautifully decorated, yet homely and relaxing. With so much space we never felt on top of each other. The bedrooms all had their own unique character, and we appreciated all the en-suites.
The garden and grounds are amazing. We had fun on the lake with the boat, and one person used one of the paddle boards. No one was brave enough to swim though!!
My 6 year old grandson enjoyed building a dam in the stream. We enjoyed feeding the ducks and watching their antics! We walked in some of the extensive grounds and saw wild deer.
Even though it was the end of October we had 3 days where it was sunny enough to sit outside, where it was a sun trap.
On booking our stay I had a helpful discussion with Russell on the phone which helped me plan our stay. Then I had another one nearer the time. Throughout our stay Russell and Richard were very responsive and ready to help. Our Tesco order arrived before we did with Russell and Richard putting chilled and frozen items away for us.
It was great to have a dining room table large enough to seat everyone comfortably. We did a combination of cooking for ourselves, Chinese takeaway and eating at restaurants recommended by Russell. The kitchens are well equipped for catering for large numbers On the last evening Sam, from Luna & Finch, came and cooked a meal for us. A perfect ending to a perfect week.
I would definitely recommend Colleton Hall as a place to stay.
We Would Go Back in a Heartbeat – Paula and Warren – September 2024
Colleton East Wing – superb accommodation located in North Devon.
East Wing is beautifully decorated and brilliantly provisioned. We loved our time there and the hosts, Russell and Richard, provided great suggestions for daily walks and historically interesting sites to visit. They obviously love the property and have created an elegant environment that is also welcoming and comfortable. Colleton has superb grounds including a lake with ducks, fields and woods. Plenty to do for all, and we would go back there again in a heartbeat.
East Wing – Beautiful Property, the Grounds are stunning – Jack – September 2024
5 Stars! Amazing stay in a beautiful property (East Wing) , the grounds are stunning and very peaceful. You feel at home as soon as you enter the property. Russell and Richard are great hosts who have put so much love into the property. I would highly recommend this property and will definitely stay again.
A Fantastic Find – Andrew S – September 2024
We have just returned from a fabulous four days at Colleton Hall, celebrating our Silver Wedding anniversary with family. We couldn’t have been made more welcome by our hosts Russell and Richard. They both clearly take immense pride and pleasure in opening their wonderful home to guests and ensuring everyone is happy during their stay.
A fantastic find and we would thoroughly recommend Colleton Hall for special times with family or friends.
A Luxury Stay in the Heart of the Devon Countryside –
Sarah F – August 2024
Our group of twelve (and two dogs) had an absolute blast in the Hall and the East Wing – thank you so much! There was loads of space for our gaggle of teenagers to hang out, and we loved the woods and the picnic area, especially on a warm summer’s evening. Between us we tried every watercraft you’d left available and the most intrepid swam in the lake most mornings, too. It was fabulous to get to spend a happy afternoon with Russell and Richard themselves – impeccable hosts, and we’d recommend Colleton Hall to anyone looking for a luxury stay in the heart of the Devon countryside. Thank you!
The Loveliest House We’ve Found So Far – Emma H – August 2024
Twelve of us stayed at Colleton Hall for a week – three families with six adults and six teenagers, as well as two dogs. Every year we take a holiday with the same group, and this was the loveliest house we’ve found so far. Inside and out, there was plenty of space for everyone to relax together or to find time alone.
While the house is beautifully furnished with antiques, lots of books, interesting artwork and thoughtful decorative touches everywhere, it’s also comfortable and cozy, and we felt right at home. All the bedrooms have en suite bathrooms, with lots of hot water available after a swim in the lake. The kitchen was well stocked with a while range of spices and baking ingredients, as well as essentials like oil, salt and pepper
The grounds are really extensive, with a beautiful view from the terrace across the lawns, lake, woods and meadows beyond, all of which are part of the estate. Several times we spotted deer running across the meadows and when we were walking in the woodland. The owners have set up picnic areas in the grounds, where we all enjoyed drinks and marshmallows round the fire after supper. The kids fed the ducks by the lake every day, and spent time messing about on the paddle boards and kayak.
The owners, Russell and Richard, were charming and friendly, making sure that our stay was comfortable and that everything ran smoothly. They were always available to answer questions and quickly fix any issues that came up. It’s clear that they have put a lot of love and care into making the house a perfect place to stay.
Amazing house, 5 stars All the Way! – The Arnolds, McCaans and Judds – August 2024
Amazing house, 5 stars all the way! We stayed here mid August with a family of 14; 8 adults and 6 children. The house is decorated beautifully – so we did keep the kids out of the drawing room but there was so much space in the bedrooms and living areas for us to spread out. We also hired the east wing for the grandparents which was perfect for them to get away when they wanted to. The grounds are amazing with fields to walk and a fire pit with a sitting area just across the fence – the children loved roasting marshmallows! We also all had lots of fun on the lake using the boats and paddles boards every day. The children got really good! Life jackets provided in the house along with spare wellies if needed and outdoor towels. Great outdoor seating and sunbathing areas too!
We would definitely return another time and as its central Devon, we chose on different days to visit south and north Devon.
Thank you for having us,
The Arnolds, Mccanns & Judds
No need to leave the hall for a true escape – Andrew G – August 2024
Having stayed in many large and luxurious houses over the years, I have to put Colleton right up there at the top. Rather than renting a house, you are renting a home and what a home Russell and Richard have created. Everything you could wish for and more besides in terms of facilities, grounds and location topped off, with excellent taste in furnishing, decor and art.
The location is perfect whether you want to go north, south or just stay in the centre of Devon. However there is no need to leave the Hall at all for a true escape.
Russell was very helpful in recommending local eateries, I would endorse his choice of the Swan at Bampton for Sunday lunch and Woods at Dulverton.
Very much looking forward to a return visit.
We had a hoot! – Allison and Jason – July 2024
Just returned home after a relaxing break at the wonderful Colleton Hall.
What a way to recharge the batteries. Sipping wine on the terrace, whilst watching
ducklings at play, alongside aerobatic displays from the swifts, Truly delightful.
The accommodation was spotless and is tastefully decorated. The grounds are magical, with plenty of seating areas, to catch the sun at any time of day, and the woods provide a variety of interesting walks. Our four legged friend was in his element. He has done nothing but sleep since we left!
And finally, the hosts, Russell and Richard, for whom nothing is too much trouble. They are so thoughtful and generous. Good company too…we had a hoot.
The Perfect Blend of Historical Elegance and Modern Comfort – Sarah R – July 2024
We recently ran a retreat at Colleton Hall in Devon, and it was an absolutely enchanting experience from start to finish! Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Devon countryside, this charming estate offers the perfect blend of historical elegance and modern comfort.
From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warm hospitality and exceptional service from Russell and Richard, the owners. They went above and beyond to ensure our stay was nothing short of perfect. The rooms are beautifully appointed, combining classic décor with all the contemporary amenities you could wish for. Every detail, from the plush bedding to the elegant furnishings, exudes luxury and comfort.
The grounds of Colleton Hall are simply stunning. We made use of the grounds to facilitate our meditations and yoga sessions, as well as a luxurious picnic in the woods. We also had the privilege of feeding the ducks and ducklings each afternoon, which was a delightful and serene experience. Additionally, we enjoyed a very informative nature walk from Ed, which enriched our appreciation of the local flora and fauna. The meticulously maintained gardens and serene atmosphere provided a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a peaceful retreat, or a place to celebrate a special occasion, Colleton Hall is the perfect destination. Our stay was truly magical, and we can’t wait to return. Thank you, Russell and Richard, for an unforgettable experience.
Fabulous Long Weekend – Lizzie M – June 2024
We’ve recently returned from the most fabulous long weekend at the beautiful Colleton Hall. We were looking for an impressive but comfortable country house for a special multi-generational get together. From booking and throughout, the hosts Russell and Richard were so helpful and kind. The house is just beautiful- every room perfectly appointed. The lake, woods, picnic area and grounds were perfect. We were so sad to leave and will definitely be coming back. Definitely book- you won’t find anywhere nicer or better value!
A Stunning Building – Ed W – May 2024
We stayed at Colleton Hall in early May 2024 for a family member’s significant birthday and had three generations stay there. The hall is beautiful and has been lovingly-restored by its owners. It is a stunning building with loads of space for all the family. We enjoyed some very good weather and so were able to explore the beautiful grounds, including the lake and some woods. Our children loved feeding the ducks every morning by the lake in the sun, which was idyllic.
Russell was an extremely helpful host, who made contact before we arrived offering recommendations of places to eat and see and was able to take in a supermarket delivery which was in the fridge for our arrival. He was extremely helpful throughout the stay. We had an amazing time and could not recommend Colleton Hall enough.
An Absolutely Lovely Weekend – Amanda and Hugh – April 2024
We had an absolutely lovely weekend staying at Colleton Hall for my 30th Birthday with a group of friends. We made the most of the beautiful house and grounds, going for swims, walks, boating and even a game of rounders.
Russell and Richard were very warm and helpful hosts from start to finish. They were on hand to answer all our queries, providing endless recommendations, and even went out of their way to post us some of our forgotten belongings.
The house was very comfortable for a large group and we would highly recommend a stay for anyone looking for a fun weekend in the beautiful surrounds of regional Devon. It was also definitely worthwhile organising food deliveries and catering at the Hall for a seamless weekend.
This Country House is a Haven – Oliver R – Easter 2024
Nestled amidst serene woods and overlooking a picturesque lake, this country house is a haven for adventurers young and old. As we stepped onto the grounds, we couldn’t help but feel transported into a real-life Famous Five adventure. The vast fields and woods ready for dog walks, the tame and playful ducks, and paddle boarding for the brave, all offered endless hours of entertainment. The house itself exudes warmth and charm, instantly putting us at ease with its elegant yet relaxed interior and inviting atmosphere.
It’s clear that the owners have poured their hearts into this property. Colleton Hall’s character is evident in every corner of the estate. Every moment spent here felt like a cherished memory in the making.
Absolutely Stunning – February – Jo L
We found the absolutely stunning Colleton Hall following an Internet search for a family gathering to celebrate an 83rd birthday.
Colleton fitted everything we were looking for – ensuites for everyone, dining table that is actually big enough to seat us all. Lots to do for the younger generation and a beautiful drawing room for those wanting some quiet time. The library has a fantastic collection of books to peruse.
We booked both the Hall and East Wing. Russell was extremely helpful with all the birthday arrangements, including a firework display.
Colleton lived up to all expectations and then threw in a bit more. Seeing a herd of deer in the field beyond the lake early in the morning was a real bonus!
The House has a Great Deal of Charm – New Year – 29th December 2023 – 2nd January 2024 – David R
Colleton Hall is the most wonderful house to rent for a large number of guests in the heart of North Devon. The owners, Russell and Richard could not have been more accommodating both before we arrived, during check in and throughout our stay, always on hand to answer any questions. The check in was thorough and highlighted just how well equipped the house is both in terms of the kitchens, pantry, dining room and Drawing room and bedrooms. The bedrooms are all incredibly well decorated and each have their own individual charm with ensuite bathrooms, fresh towels and dressing gowns. We used the annex with three bedrooms and the guests did not feel that they were in any way excluded from the main house with the same standard of rooms throughout. The house has a great deal of charm offering a mix of modern and old and has been beautifully designed throughout. There are two wood burning stoves and a fireplace in the drawing room with a plentiful supply of wood and firelighters.
Set in 30 acres there is a beautiful garden and woods with a lake which offers swimming for the brave on New years Eve! The garden has lovely views and seating areas although we were there in winter and only lit the fire pit!
There could not have been a better way to spend New Year with our family and dogs and I would thoroughly recommend the house to anybody who would like a relaxing holiday in a beautiful part of the country. Thank you very much!
Fantastic – Chris B – October 2023
For the last 10 years a group of us, 4 or 5 couples have celebrated 2 anniversaries and a birthday by taking a house for a long weekend in early October. Whilst our requirements are not that difficult, it has often been difficult to find a property that fits the bill.
We always look for 4 bedrooms en- suite (usually the most difficult to fulfil)
A good restaurant nearby for a meal out one night
Good local walks
And a pub nearby to walk to for Sunday lunch.
It was my turn to organise this year and whilst I was not looking at Devon as a location Colleton Hall appeared on one of my searches. We all agreed it fitted the bill and it was duly booked.
The pre arrival information was excellent and Russell followed up with both a call and an email which were really helpful, not least as when we discussed where I had booked for dinner Saturday he told me it had closed (and the restaurant concerned had not informed me). The alternative he suggested – Woods in Dulverton was excellent and he even sent me links to book taxis.
The property itself (the hall) was fantastic, Russell and Richard have spent a lot of time and effort in the restoration, 6 en-suite bathrooms, copious hot water, 2 kitchens and every appliance and condiment you might need plus complimentary beers and a magnum of Prosecco.
There is a fabulous outdoor area with loungers and glorious views which with glorious October weather, we took full advantage of.
They clearly enjoy art, often African, and pictures of bulls feature prominently although I never managed to ask why?!
On our final evening we invited them to join us for a drink and that continued long into the night – a really memorable evening, we will return!!
The Most Wonderful Holiday Imaginable – Katie S – September 2023
From the minute you walk into Colleton Hall, Russell and Richard’s passion for design and restoration unfolds in front of you. What they have achieved is nothing short of brilliant in turning a somewhat forgotten and unloved gem into the bright, spacious, elegant and, most of all, homely space imaginable in which to spend a few glorious days. It could so easily have become a space in which you were frightened to tread for fear of disturbing the aesthetic, but instead you find yourself in a rather grand home from home where you can relax and, for a while, forget the outside world and immerse yourself in joyful luxury with family and friends. Should you need to entertain royalty there are kitchen gizmos and fine dining essentials aplenty but equally a simple meal on the glorious terrace overlooking the lake will bring joy to anyone lucky enough to spend time here. The bedrooms and bathrooms are the height of comfort and relaxation with beds and linens of such comfort and if you are fortunate enough, as I was, to be allotted the master bedroom, then the slipper bath with a view is breathtaking. Russell and Richard are so welcoming from first contacting them and so helpful and keen to assist and make everything perfect for you and are on hand should you need them, but they are the masters of discretion and are in no way intrusive so you can relax and make believe that this is your own home. We will definitely be returning and I would urge anyone considering booking to cast any doubts aside and treat yourself to truly the most wonderful holiday imaginable.
Superb House and Ideal Location – David M – September 2023
We have visited many rental homes but none match this superb house and ideal location. The owners were amazingly proactive, calling in advance to talk through our needs. They even setup a WhatsApp chat so we could solve the inevitable on-site questions about operating the coffee machine or when would be ok to mow the lawns. If you are looking for an instagramable house, completely private estate, multiplicity of games or garden pass times, this is the place for you.
Stunningly Beautiful – Jan W August 2023
Before we had even arrived at Colleton Hall, we had experienced the support and kindness of the owner, Russell, who had touched base with us prior to our stay to ensure that all of our requests had been met. And they had!
Arriving at the house we evidenced the attention to detail in every aspect. The house is stunningly beautiful, full of art and delicately lovely objects, yet the house is welcoming and you are invited to appreciate and love the house and all it holds. Every minor detail has been attended to from the chairs round the fire pit, extra candles, life jackets for the children, and on and on…..;
We were a party of 18 from the youngest to the oldest. The space and accommodation, both in the house, the lake, and surrounding acres absorbed us entirely and comfortably whether eating outside or in the central kitchen, the hub of all activity. Or the concert on the grand piano in the Drawing Room.
We had a wonderful week at Colleton Hall and I cannot recommend it highly enough as the owner’s appreciation of beauty and love was evidenced throughout the Hall.
Garden and Surroundings Were Absolutely Beautiful – Donna – August 2023
We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend in the East wing at Colleton Hall!
Russell & Richard were very friendly and welcoming and couldn’t do enough to make sure we were happy, without being imposing in any way.
There was so much available to do. Indoor and outdoor games for adults and young children. Picnic areas and fire pits. The children especially loved feeding the ducks and being taken around the lake in the rowing boat.
The garden and surroundings were absolutely beautiful, even though we didn’t have the best weather, it still made us want to get out and explore.
The house was immaculately clean, very comfortable and well kitted out with everything we needed.
We can’t wait to visit again!
A Simply Stunning Property – Jane T – August 2023
A simply stunning property hid away in its own beautiful grounds. Stayed in the East Wing for a weekend in August for a family birthday celebration. There was everything that you could possibly need plus some lovely surprises provided by our charismatic host Russell. Nothing was too much trouble. The views from all of the bedrooms of the lake and the grounds were just breathtaking. The ducks were highly entertaining and it was a treat to see so many red deer in the field first thing in the morning. Our host was clearly passionate everyone should enjoy themselves whilst there and had clearly thought of everything from picnic tables hid away in the grounds, fire pit, sun loungers, football down by the football net begging to be kicked and the upturned rowing boat tied up just enticing you to give it a go after a couple of glasses of bubbly watching the sun go down. The weekend went really quick though and all I can think about is booking up to go back the question is when.
A Beautiful Period Home – Beth O’D. – July 2023
We have recently returned from a wonderfully relaxing week in Colleton Hall – what a beautiful period home, nestled deep in the Devon countryside.
Our family gathering, for 50th Wedding Anniversary celebrations, was 17 strong with ages ranging from 2yrs to 79yrs and a thoroughly enjoyable time was had by all.
The house itself has been so thoughtfully laid out and tastefully decorated throughout. Despite its size there is an overwhelmingly ‘cozy’ feel which allowed a comfortable stay, with lovely touches such as themed artwork and books, giving every room and an individual “personality” and allowed for easy room allocation across the family. The East Wing worked perfectly as a getaway for the teenagers to have space and kick back with a film, whilst the main house kitchen/diner was the hub of social activity for the whole gathering.
The facilities and grounds are extensive and the family enjoyed a variety of activities – particularly swimming in, and paddle-boarding/sailing on, the large lake and ball games in the lower garden (as well as some sunbathing on the comfortable loungers, when weather allowed!) The bbq was large and easy to use – easily providing enough space to cook up a feast for all of us – and sundowners from the upper meadow, followed by toasted smores and singing around campfire in the evening, made for an idyllic end to the sunniest day! The picnic and campfire areas are well stocked with chairs, candles and logs which was so useful as it avoided too much being carried the short walk from the house 🙂
As the weather was rather rainy and unsettled we were unsure how the large group would remain entertained in the house. We needn’t have worried – the baby grand was enjoyed by all our piano-playing family members, providing a relaxing ambience throughout the lounge and dining area, whilst the Sonos was easy to use and allowed for various soundtracks for others using the kitchen and upstairs. The pool table was a great hit and various competitions were enjoyed by all ages. Although we brought some favourite board games from home there was an excellent selection and many nooks around the ground floor where multiple games could be played by different groups without being on top of each other.
The 2 kitchens in the main house had everything needed to make cooking easy and convenient, many complimentary ‘cupboard staple’ items over and above what one would normally expect from a holiday home . Russell and Richard also went above and beyond when the second dishwasher decided to stop working – within 24hr a brand new one was delivered, fitted and working which was an exceptional response to something no-one could have predicted and was very much appreciated. In fact, throughout our stay, any small query or request was responded to in a prompt and friendly manner and it was abundantly clear how much they both wanted us to enjoy their home as much as they do! Little tips on where to see the best sunset, or how and when to spot the wild deer, made a huge difference to our stay and we really felt welcomed and supported!
On the Thursday we all we had a fabulous day celebrating our lovely parents’/grandparents’ 50th wedding anniversary. The dining room was a perfect setting which enabled us to seat all 17 members of the family very comfortably. Although we cooked ourselves most of the week, we engaged the catering services of Anita-Clare and her team at La Petite Bouchee. They had been recommended by Russell and certainly did not disappoint! It was particularly helpful as the caterers knew the house and kitchens well, and were able to work in the 2nd kitchen, whilst we enjoyed canapés and bubbles in the kitchen-diner prior to the meal – with minimal cross-over. It all felt rather decadent and was something really special for our folks’ special day!
Russell’s support and input prior to our stay (welcoming us for visits to the hall to see how room allocations and activities would work, as well as many emails and exchanges with recommendations and ideas for activities) was excellent – prompt and very helpful responses to all our questions and above and beyond care – for example, they kindly put a bolt on the door adjoining the bunk room and en suite as we were concerned about access for our youngest ones. This level of care continued throughout our stay as needed, but without being intrusive – a perfect balance. From their kind welcome gifts to us, on arrival, of bubbly, chocs and complimentary beers, to the beautiful flowers arranged throughout the various rooms, we had such a wonderful start to our visit and it just got better from there and nothing seemed too much trouble to make our stay perfect!
We have felt so very privileged to stay in Russell and Richard’s gorgeous home – arriving as paying guests, but leaving as friends! We will miss the daily duck-feeding and waking to sit on our balcony, listen to the birdsong, and look out at the beautiful gardens, lake, meadows and skies beyond. Thank you both so much for making us feel so welcome and we can’t wait to come and visit again soon!
The Location Was Perfect – Nicky K – July 2023
We have just returned home following a fabulous few days staying at the East Wing of Colleton Hall. We are a family of five, and the accommodation was simply perfect. There was plenty of space, and everything you could wish for was provided. The owners were so lovely – even communicating with us before we arrived to let us know places to visit and the best pubs to book meals at too. The decor was stunning – it felt very luxurious and being an interiors enthusiast I really appreciated this.
Our boys absolutely loved the lake – they went in the canoe and boat every day. They also became very fond of the very friendly ducks that greeted us there each day!
The location was perfect for us. So many beautiful walks and yet nearer enough pubs and shops to pop to. The local village has a lovely play area and tennis court that we used too.
We would highly recommend staying at Colleton and will be definitely returning. Five stars!
Fantastic Weekend – Charles C – June 2023
We hired the hall over a weekend in early June, 2023 to celebrate my wife’s 70th birthday. Our party included seven from the next generation and five grandchildren ranging in age from seven to fourteen.
The accommodation is excellent with plenty of en suite bathrooms. The kitchen, pantry etc is well serviced with cookers, dishwashers, washing machine if necessary and plenty of cutlery and crockery.
The weather was so warm that we did not need to venture out of the hall. The small lake provided plenty of entertainment with the rowing boat and paddle boards. We played cricket on the sloping lawn and with a goal net, the younger family members had several kick abouts.
We had ordered a Tesco home delivery, which included sufficient supplies for the weekend . We had a barbecue Sunday evening following by baking marshmallows over the fire pit later that evening.
An outside chef was arranged to provide a meal Saturday evening to celebrate the occasion.
In summary, we had a fantastic weekend with all the family enjoying themselves. I would recommend the hall to any family requiring a location to accommodate up to 18 family members.
Excellent – Karl C – June 2023
Our stay at Colleton Hall and the East Annex was excellent! We were a group of 6 adults and 2 children. We really loved the grounds. We cooked dinner over the fire pit (beyond the natural pond) almost every night. We really enjoyed feeding the dogs. Sorry, I meant to say ducks (they wagged their tails and followed us around like dogs! :D) Russell and Richard were lovely hosts, and you could really tell that they took pride in their home. All of the restaurant and point of interest locations that they provided were fantastic. We would highly recommend this accommodation to anyone who wants a bit of peace, quiet, and relaxation during their holiday 🙂
Luxury Break in Devon – John and Angus – April 2023
We were in the group staying at Colleton Hall over Easter booked by Andrew.
The house was very beautiful both inside and out. It was such a pleasure for us to stay there. The hosts Russell and Richard were very charming and welcoming and we much appreciated them allowing our boisterous 3 year old Labrador to stay with us.
We would highly recommend Colleton Hall to others who may be looking for a luxury break in Devon.
Magical Setting – Andrew K – April 2023
I just wanted to say that our recent stay at Colleton Hall over Easter was wonderful. The property is gorgeous, as is the garden and the magical setting. The host Russell could not have been more helpful, approachable or friendly. We utilised all the facilities there and spent much time in the cosy sitting room and dining room. All the bedrooms were choicely appointed, and all ensuite too. All my team rated the whole stay highly …and that is praise indeed!
A Brilliant Time – Neil T – April 2023
We had a brilliant time at Colleton Hall. It was a family gathering with all ages. For the kids there was lots of fun playing games, exploring the grounds, paddling about in the pond, feeding the ducks and camp fires in the evening. For the grandparents there was a lovely garden to relax in and enjoy the beautiful view, and very comfortable indoors when the Easter sun went down.
The house is beautiful. A lovely mix of old and new, very tasteful, comfortable and with a real wow factor – especially the master bathroom! It’s private, with beautiful grounds and an outlook you could never get bored of.
Russell was the perfect host. Everything was well organised and thought through. There when you needed him, and not when you didn’t.
An exceptional holiday in a wonderful place.
Perfection – Jenya -February 2023
This vacation was extremely special to me since it was a surprise my husband arranged for my 30th birthday. We arrived at Colleton Hall as a party of 14 guests and stayed for 4 nights.
Using the word “perfection” would probably not be strong enough. The venue is absolutely stunning in every way and equipped to one’s every whim.
Let me mention the hardwood floors, the magnificent artwork, the magical forest and lake (that are full of friendly animals), the fireplaces, several fully equipped kitchens and dining areas, and of course, the marvellous suite with the freestanding bathtub watching over the forest.
Not only was the venue so magnificent that we would hardly want to leave it during the day in order to explore the area and near cities, but it was also fully equipped to help you enjoy the outdoors as well. One of the greatest features was the boot room with several pairs of boots to be used for forest exploration, sports equipment, dog toys and what not.
Staying in Colleton Hall made me feel like I am living in a fairy tale I could not even believe exists in the real world.
I would also like to mention the amazing interactions we had with everyone involved. Starting with lovely Debbie that was ready to meet and greet the guests on arrival day and wish a farewell on the last day. Debbie is a genuinely lovely woman who made us feel welcomed and cared for at every moment along the way. Russel, whom I had not had the chance to meet in person, made me feel welcomed even from afar. My husband mentioned he received a lot of help and care from Russel, which made him feel much at ease while arranging such a complicated trip.
I have not got the words to describe the gratitude I feel for Russell, Debbie, and being able to stay at Colleton Hall. These days were unforgettable and I will be only waiting to come back.
A Terrific Stay – Margaret Q – October 2022
Thank you, we had a terrific stay at Colleton Hall during half-term with our family of three generations… aged 3 to 73!
We can’t recommend Colleton Hall enough… what a fabulous time we all had being able to be together under one roof in such palatial, warm, comfortable surroundings. It really is fabulous and despite it’s grandeur it gives a very homely vibe with fascinating artwork everywhere to enjoy. A really wonderful property.
The owner made us feel very welcome and was always available to answer any questions we might have; helpfully receiving online orders on our behalf; nothing was too much trouble.
We loved being there and had great fun using the boats on the lake… activities not usually available to us, quite unique.
We plan to return one day!
Jean B – September 2022 – Just Wonderful
Our Stay at Colleton Hall – 23rd-27th September 2022
We booked Colleton Hall and the Annex for a family weekend which included family members from Australia who hadn’t been seen for a very long time. Our party consisted of 14 which included two boys 12 and 14 from Australia, so every room was used.
My contact was Russell and we struck up quite a chatty email exchange, my queries being answered quickly and with lots of helpful information. Our online grocery delivery was received and put away for us prior to our arrival. There were lots of spices, condiments and even cereal left in the cupboards and a bowl of fruit and growing vegetables for us to help ourselves to.
Colleton was everything we hoped it would be with the added bonus of one very sunny day and the rest dry meaning we could spend a lot of time outside, the younger members of the family particularly enjoying rowing on the lake and playing ball games and feeding the ducks. The Hall is beautifully furnished and very well equipped with many pieces of fine artwork around and vases of lovely flowers.
The Hall is set in beautiful countryside and the majority of the rooms and terraces all have wonderful views over the owned fields, lake and woods. For my husband and I it was very deja vu of our family home of many years ago even down to the lake and ducks, so it was just wonderful.
Everyone enjoyed a very special weekend and hopefully we might return and we have already recommended it to several friends.
Thank you very much Russell and Richard.
Complete Luxury – Sarah P – September 2022
Earlier this month a group of us stayed at Colleton Hall for 6 days.
This charming country house has been beautifully renovated over the last 5 years by Russell and Richard. When we arrived we were shown around by Russell. This took an hour as he wished us to be aware of all the facilities that we could take advantage of. This included the games room housing a pool table and numerous games, the music room with a mini grand piano and a well stocked and varied library. Moving outside the beautiful garden had its own lake which was home to the Colleton Hall mallards. Further a field were the woods with a picnic area and places to explore.
Our experience was one of relaxation and complete luxury. The attention to this was palpable. Russell remained easily contactable for any questions and ‘ checked in’ occasionally to ensure our well being.
We are all looking forward to returning
Absolutely Fabulous – Morag R – September 2022
9 of us had a truly memorable 3 nights at Colleton Hall.
The house was absolutely fabulous. We lacked for nothing even having glorious weather to eat outside in mid September.
All Russell’s recommendations for private chefs and outside caterers were excellent and much appreciated.
We were extremely comfortable and the location was both quiet and relaxing.
Many thanks
An Amazing House and Grounds! – Ann F – September 2022
What an amazing house and grounds! We were shown around by Russell and Richard who explained everything and had left welcome gifts, as well as groceries and toiletries for our use. The house was beautifully presented with top end appliances and decor and furnishings sympathetic to the style of the house. The house has a fascinating history which can be seen in the architecture which has been thoughtfully revealed around the property. There was a substantial library, eclectic artwork and a grand piano to enjoy. Every room was clean and fresh. The grounds were extensive with a vine covered outside dining area on the patio, an orchard, vegetable garden plus fields and woodland to explore. The serenity of the lake was wonderfully relaxing and taking the boat out was very popular with all the group.
Despite the sad news of our Queen, our week at Colleton Hall has been the most enjoyable and restful holiday we’ve ever had and we had to drag ourselves away to explore the Devonshire area, otherwise, we could have happily spent the whole week not having left the property.
Second to None – Heather J – August 2022
Thank you for a lovely stay at Colleton Hall. The accommodation is wonderfully presented with lots of attention to detail. The setting with woods, stream, parkland, lake and incredible dark skies are second to none and gave kids and adults so much pleasure to explore and dwell in for the week. We saw bats, deer, herons, hedgehog, frogs and heard the odd owl. Everyone came away having a real sense of slowing down and connection to nature.
Thanks to Russell and Richard for the warm welcome and advice with organising mountain biking, massage therapist, hot tub and caterers; they all added something to the mix. And ‘Woods’ at Dulverton we would unanimously recommend to other guests.
So Special – Sarah H – July 2022
It’s hard not to fall in love with Colleton Hall. Our party of ten, aged eight to eighty, from the UK and the US was given the most fabulous setting for a longed for family break. The house is beautifully decorated, comfortable and fun (wonderful art) with a baby grand in the drawing room. Colleton gives everyone privacy and space (nearly 40 acres helps). Walks here are sublime and the woods magical. There’s even a camp fire set up plus several picnic spots with benches. The super-equipped kitchen(s) make cooking pleasurable and the terrace a serene start or end to the day for summer dining. We learnt to paddleboard on the swimming lake and never made it to the beach. In fact, Colleton Hall was enough for us all. As my father said, ‘I’m in heaven.’ Russell and Richard are thoughtful and consummate hosts and clearly work hard to ensure guests want for nothing. The highlight for my young American nephew was enjoying a picnic under a 350 year old oak tree – something he’ll never do back home. We are not the repeat guest sort but Colleton is so special and such value for money, it has got us all looking in our diaries…
John and Diane – July 2022
Shangri La – Devon.
A remote, secluded hide-away just outside the tiny village of Rackenford, Devon. An earthly paradise!
John, myself and family including six grandchildren spent one week in this stunning grade 11 listed house, restored, decorated and furnished to the highest standard. Total luxury!
The gardens and extensive grounds including the lake and picnic areas provided us with a wealth of daily options. The morning and evening ritual which will hold fond memories for everyone was feeding the two Muscovy ducks George and Mildred not forgetting the ducklings on the lake. A real ‘Wow’ factor for all.
The Main and Working kitchens were a dream, so well stocked. The Bosch coffee machine (coffee beans provided) the wine fridges, the list is endless – a chef’s delight!
With lots of eateries on our doorstep and recommendations from Russell we dined in the Masons Arms in Knowstone, the Stag Inn for Sunday roast in Rackenford, the Lost Kitchen in Chettiscombe, Tiverton and Woods in Dulverton.
From the moment we arrived at Colleton Hall the ‘Oohs’ ‘Aahs’ and shrieks of delight from our grandchildren echoed everywhere as they ran to investigate their new surroundings.
Family meals, dining al fresco, walks in the fields, boating, football, tennis, hide& seek, treasure hunts, toasting marshmallows, water fights and story telling with Papa – Magic!
As well seasoned travellers and celebrating our 10th family holiday Colleton Hall has to be top of the list. History, luxury, facilities and outdoor space.
Russell and Richard you have created an amazing home, and for us a wealth of memories to take away.
Helen – June 2022 – A Wonderful Stay
I just wanted to write and say what a wonderful stay we had at Colleton Hall last weekend.
Everything could not have been more perfect. From the setting and grounds, to the hall itself and all the beautiful touches. The design and interiors are stunning and everything was super luxe and comfortable. We really appreciated the bubbles and wine that Russell left for us.
It was a joy to swim in the lake and walk in the beautiful parkland.
We very much look forward to staying again
Bronwyn – June 2022 – Relaxing Getaway in a Breathtaking Property
My family spent the weekend at Colleton Hall and it was one of the best getaways we’ve been to in a long time. The owners were incredibly kind and accommodating! They went out of their way to ensure everything was okay during our visit.
The house itself is stunning. It’s clean and beautifully decorated. We were very impressed with the number of rooms and bathrooms. There were 16 of us and everyone had their own space! If one of us wanted some time to ourselves to read a book or have a glass of wine, there was plenty of space to do so. The kitchen had everything we needed and all the appliances were easy to use. There was also plenty to do during our stay. The lake, rowing boats, and bonfire were particular favourites.
If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway in a breathtaking property, Colleton Hall is the place to be.
Alison – June 2022 – Sad to Leave
What a wonderful place to host a get together of any kind. Colleton Hall sits beautifully in its setting and we used every part of it – annex, main house, lake, terrace, barbecue, hillside fire pit – to make memories to treasure. Beautifully furnished and equipped with everything you need for a hassle free stay. Super comfy beds, lovely toiletries, amazing views to wake up to from most rooms. We were genuinely sad to leave.
Jan – June 2022 – The Time of Our Lives
What a memorable holiday we had enjoying this treasure of a house in an idyllic setting.
We were a family of 14 with children aged from 4-14. Everyone had something they loved. Gentle walks around the lake, roaming across the fields, exploring the woods, having fun on the various boats and swimming in the lake. The views are stunning and reminded us of a glorious painting. The house is impressive, spacious, warm and welcoming. No one wanted to leave but we all left with a feeling of peace and serenity.
Thank you Russell and Richard for thinking of everything and making sure we had the time of our lives!

Francoise – May 2022 – AN AMAZING PLACE
WHAT AN AMAZING PLACE
We have just spent 3 nights at Colleton Hall for a family birthday celebration and it was fantastic. The interior furnishings are superb and stylish with everything needed for an extremely comfortable stay. Champagne and chocolates, flowers in the rooms, a welcome hamper and wonderful toiletries all ready and waiting for us when we arrived. The gardens and grounds are lovely and our grandchildren all had great fun boating on the lake and toasting marshmallows up in the fire pit. Russell and Richard have created an amazing house and are wonderful hosts. They were very attentive and made us feel very welcome, nothing was too much trouble for them. We just wished we could have stayed longer.
Nikki – May 2022 – The Most Special Weekend
I wanted to send a quick email following our brilliant long weekend at Collection Hall last weekend (booked by my mother Françoise Biles).
When we arrived, Russell met us with a warm welcome and showed us around the beautiful Colleton Hall explaining where everything was and providing us with helpful advice and tips on things to do and places to go locally. We were lucky to have amazing weather on our first day and decided to spend the day at the Hall as there was so much to keep everyone happy in our 3-generation group. Having picked up supplies at the local farm shop we enjoyed a day walking in the woods, canoeing and boating on the beautiful lake, relaxing on the comfortable sun loungers and enjoying a BBQ lunch in the shade of the vine.
All of the children in our group had a great time – playing football, walking, biking, canoeing on the lake, toasting marshmallows by the fire! My 6 year old son particularly loved canoeing and boating on the lake, and knowing there were life jackets provided ensured I was able to relax too!
We enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing weekend, with so many happy memories of quality time together as a family. The Hall had everything we needed and was beautifully presented and well equipped and arranged. We enjoyed three delicious dinners by Relish, amazing food and great service.
We really did have the most special weekend, lots of happy memories and a great family celebration. Thank you Russell for all of the thought and attention you put into things for your guests.
Isla M – May 2022
We had the most fabulous time at Colleton Hall! It is an incredible place with lovely owners. A group of 17 of us stayed at Colleton Hall and East Wing for two nights to celebrate a bridal party. The property was spacious, beautifully decorated and furnished to a very high quality. It had everything you could need for a wonderful weekend. Russell, the owner, was extremely good at communicating ahead of our stay, to ensure that we had everything needed. During our stay, we had a private chef and yoga instructor visit, which Russell helped facilitate. He had left flowers, chocolates and champagne which made our arrival even more exciting. We had a fabulous weekend! Russell and Richard have created something incredibly unique and special, which is difficult to put into words. We all left with special memories, longing to return! I cannot recommend Colleton Hall enough, it really is a hidden gem and a little piece of heaven!
Idyllic Location – Valerie – MAY 2022
My three generational party of 17 stayed at Colleton Hall and East Wing for 3 nights to celebrate a major birthday at the end of April, and we all had a fabulous time. The whole place was perfectly furnished with enough space to spread out. The owners had thoughtfully left flowers, chocolates, and prosecco along with many other things to help out in a top-notch property rental. The whole place was greatly admired by all including the very grand master bathroom. During our stay we made excellent use of the Hall with many of us sitting on the patio, others used the various craft on the lake, quite a few walked around the grounds and enjoyed feeding the ducks. We were disappointed not to make use of the fire pit! Our party came together in the evenings for meals and games in the library / dining room. The kitchen room was lovely for meal preparation and pre-meal drinks. The lounge and staircase were great for family photos. Russell and Richard have created a fantastic place and we all left with wonderful memories of our time at this idyllic location.

An Outstanding and Unique Venue – the Quinn Family – April 2022
Beautiful, scenic, yet safe, Colleton Hall was an outstanding and unique venue for our family holiday. 17 of us aged from 3 to 76 years came together for a wonderful golden wedding celebration. With carefully decorated bedrooms (each having its own sumptuous en-suite), a huge dining room with its library, the comfortable, tasteful main rooms and the ultra-modern equipped kitchens, there was plenty of space for us all. Comfy garden furniture with shade provision, made the outside terraced areas perfect for relaxing picnic lunches overlooking breath taking views and the odd deer roaming in the distance. We totally enjoyed exploring the extensive woods, grounds and fields, perfect for walks, games and toasting marshmallows in the well set up fire-pit. The lake, with its wild life and a variety of safe boats and life jackets, kept the older children well occupied, along with the football net, cricket set, piano and pool table. The little ones enjoyed delivering food and talking to the ducks! The booking process (although interrupted by Covid) was smooth and well supported by the kind and friendly owners. They made us all so very welcome and were helpful throughout our stay, without being intrusive. We highly recommend a stay at Colleton Hall in its perfect setting, as all our family had an amazing time and we shall all love returning to this very special place.
The Quinn Family April 2022
A Truly Special Place and Fantastic Setting – Sharon. O – March 2022
Colleton Hall is a truly special place and was a fantastic setting to celebrate my 50th birthday with friends and family. We stayed here for 10 nights and spent most of our time enjoying the magnificent grounds, lake and house. Each room in the house is beautifully and thoughtfully decorated and the kitchen(s) have everything you could ever need when entertaining a large gathering of people. Our hosts, Russell and Richard were amazing and went above and beyond to help with any request we had – they gave us a truly warm welcome and made our stay even more special. We loved Colleton Hall so much, we have already booked to go back next year. I could not recommend the house or the hosts more highly and any stay here will be very memorable.
Perfect – Tim G – March 2022
Colleton Hall was perfect for our get together of 18 people. The house is laid out really well for socialising, and with a library/lounge at one end of the house (and the annexe) there are quiet areas for those looking for it. The bedrooms are all well sized and thoughtfully laid out. The kitchens (plural), are well equipped for cooking, and the side kitchen is perfect for having outside caterers in without disturbing the main part of the house. With plenty of outdoor space, a south facing garden, and a spacious patio area, it’s perfect for soaking up the sun! The hosts could not have been more welcoming. They were generous with their time when showing us around, and keen for us to make the most of everything Colleton Hall had to offer.
Wow! – Lily – 05/01/2022
Just returned home from an amazing New Year’s Eve. Stayed at Colleton Hall and all I can say is wow wow. The place is amazing, clean, fully equipped with everything you need, spacious, beautifully decorated throughout. There were eighteen of us and we rented the extra annex as well, which was also lovely. Richard and Russell were so accommodating and nothing was too much trouble, they were just one text away and their response was super quick. The grounds were perfect for walks and relaxing, especially for the dogs, one being a German Shepard who did manage to go for a swim in the beautiful lake. Thank you for making our New Year’s Eve one to remember. 10/10.
Perfect Setting – Riccardo – 31/12/2021
Russell and Richard were the perfect hosts from start to finish. This was a trip that had been postponed from Christmas 2020 because of the pandemic so everyone was so looking forward to the break. Colleton Hall did not disappoint.
Russell and Richard had gone to great lengths to ensure that the hall was decorated perfectly with a stunning Christmas tree taking center stage.
The hall itself was just the perfect setting with plenty of space for our party to enjoy. Being big foodies the the dining areas and kitchens were a big win for us and gave everyone a chance to get involved. Fully kitted out with everything you could possibly need. Perfection. We also enjoyed the spacious bedrooms and bathrooms again fitted out to a high specification with no detail missed, from fluffy towels to crisp bed sheets it’s safe to say, everyone slept well.
Colleton Hall is the gift that keeps giving, once you venture out to explore the grounds it’s surprise after surprise from woody walks to private picnic areas where we relaxed with a little tipple while out enjoying everything the beautiful grounds have to offer. We had the best time and can’t wait to visit Colleton Hall again.
A wonderful place – Manoj P – December 2021
We had a fantastic time at Colleton Hall. Russell & Richard have created such a wonderful place to unwind and relax. They recommended all the best local restaurants and places to visit. The lake and grounds are immaculately maintained and such a pleasure to enjoy. The house is full of quality furniture and furnishings. The kitchen was well stocked with essential herbs and condiments. Milk, bread, and butter was left in the Fridge for us upon our arrival. We also had a large bottle of Prosecco on the kitchen table for us to enjoy! Such Wonderful hosts. We will certainly return to Colleton Hall again.
Wonderful Weekend – Kate – December 2021
We had a wonderful weekend with three families at Colleton Hall this past weekend. The house set-up was ideal for a large group — lots of areas for the kids to hang out while the adults could sit by the fire. We loved the grounds as well and did a long walk through the forest by the river. We especially liked that it was a grand, period house that felt modern, fresh and cosy. Overall, I would highly recommend the property.
Fallen in Love – Kathryn – November 2021
Colleton Hall is beyond compare. The house, grounds, view and everything combined has created a space that you want to stay in forever. We had the most amazing weekend at Colleton that would not have been so perfect if it weren’t for Russell and Richard. They could not have been more accommodating, knowledgeable or helpful. All the touches and details along the way helped to create the weekend we had imagined. Not only that, they were superb company! We could wax lyrical about the beautiful ensuite rooms, the lake, woodlands or the most splendid bathroom ever, but we’d rather encourage you to go and experience this place for yourselves. We have definitely fallen in love with Colleton Hall – and with Russell and Richard too!
Wonderful Stay! – The Richards Family – November 2021
We had such a wonderful stay at Colleton Hall. Russell and Richard made us so welcome, as did the ducks!
The house was stunning, as was the grounds, and we enjoyed woodland walks, fire pits and rowing on the lake. Can’t wait for a return visit! A huge thank you from all 17 of us .
Incredible! – Greg – October 2021
Our recent stay at Colleton Hall was nothing short of incredible. Our hosts, Russell and Richard were fantastic, offering up some incredible recommendations, including our guided walk with Ed (great for adults and kids), plus Charlotte from Wild Soul Yoga – also fabulous for the whole family, plus a whole host of amazing restaurant recommendations. The grounds are to die for and come alive in the evenings, with the calls from Owls and other wildlife relaxing you to sleep each night. A truly magical week, that we cannot wait to relive. 5 stars!
Stunning – Jake – October 2021
We had a truly wonderful time. The accommodation is stunning, the grounds magnificent and the adventures to be had are endless. Russell and Richard are exceptionally hospitable, they open up their home with such warmth and kindness. A magnificent stay, surrounded by absolute beauty and in luxurious comfort. We can’t wait to return.
AMAZING! – Amelia – October 2021
Our stay at Colleton Hall was AMAZING! If you’re looking for pure luxury and escapism this is the house. Russell and Richard were the perfect hosts and couldn’t have been more accommodating, the small touches really made it a memorable and special experience. The grounds and lake are also spectacular, with so much to do there is no need to really leave the house. I would 100% recommend to anyone who is thinking of visiting!
Ideal Location – Steve S – September 2021
We have just returned from a wonderful stay at Colleton Hall which was an ideal location for our party of 10 plus 3 babies. The accommodation has been lovingly restored by Russell and Richard and is of a very high quality. They were perfect hosts taking great trouble to cater for all our needs and we would recommend Colleton Hall as a perfect venue for a holiday.
Wonderful – Mark and Francesca S. – September 2021
Together with 6 other couples – a group of friends that goes back to University days in the 1960s – we spent a wonderful long weekend at the beautifully situated and brilliantly furnished and equipped Colleton Hall. We go away together to different places every year or so, and this venue has topped the list so far. Russell and Richard, who were there to welcome us as we arrived (before removing themselves for the duration, leaving behind generous gifts of consumables), were extremely helpful, gracious and kind, clearly wanting us to enjoy all that was there to the full. And a lot is there – as well as the house itself, which really couldn’t have been more comfortable or better-equipped and is decked with the varied and interesting art they have collected, the lake (with its warm springs) is excellent for swimming and the surrounding meadows and woods are rich in nature (the ancient herb-rich meadows are of particular note). The lake area as well as the house has outside lighting, and the effect at night is really special. Russell had organised for us a nature walk given by Ed, a local forestry expert with a fascinatingly wide experience of all kinds of arboriculture, who interpreted the local ecosystem for us from deep understanding. As a group we had a rather wide range of our knowledge of natural history, which Ed was able to deal with most impressively, and whatever the level of your knowledge we would definitely recommend a tour of the fields, woods and wildlife with Ed if it is available. All in all we had a great time at Colleton Hall – Russell and Richard’s home, which they have restored and fashioned over the past few years with great dedication and skill, and now delight in opening to the enjoyment of others. Thank you Russell and Richard! Just to show that I do have critical faculties I might mention the small difficulty in opening cupboards hinged at the side with handles placed centrally…but my goodness, that was the only downside we could think of.
House is Beautiful – Siri – September 2021
Colleton Hall on a warm summer’s day is a dream.
The house itself is beautiful, and is decorated and furnished to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere . It’s extremely well kitted out and has everything you need.
The host, Russell was extremely helpful and is knowledgeable about the area and was full of useful information.
Everywhere was sparkling clean and after 5 weekends away around south England this summer , this house is our firm favourite.
A Memorable Weekend – Margaret K. – September 2021
We had a thoroughly enjoyable time and were most impressed by the house and its amenities. So much so, I decided it might be good to let you, as the agent, know my thoughts about this special house.
The setting at Colleton Hall is perfect, wonderfully secluded, with idyllic views over the the lake, rising field and trees beyond.
The house is spacious, tastefully furnished and beautifully maintained. The many paintings, sculptures and objets d’art provided much interest and made us feel we were sharing a much loved home.
The kitchen, or (more correctly) kitchens, were extremely well equipped with high quality appliances, kitchenware, crockery, glassware and cutlery.
There was masses of space and furniture so that all 14 of us could gather together comfortably inside and on the terrace – or find a quiet corner if needed!
We stayed in the annexe and were very comfortable there. As everywhere else, we felt the owners had put a lot of thought into the details that would make their guests feel at home and well cared for.
A highlight of the weekend was the morning nature walk by Ed. It was informative, entertaining and totally absorbing. Ed is very knowledgeable with a fund of anecdotes from a long and varied career in forestry and estate management. His deep (but unsentimental) love of nature and wildlife shone through. I loved the walk and learned so much.
Thank you to everyone involved for providing this lovely setting for a memorable weekend.
Beautiful – Ines and Mike N. – September 2021
We have just had a wonderful weekend with twelve other friends at this property. We have never stayed in such a well-provisioned house and appreciated all the art pieces and furnishings. Russell and Richard were very generous in allowing us to use the food that was in the house as well as the magnum prosecco and more. We loved the landscape and lake and a highlight was the nature tour with Ed. It is a beautiful and comfortable house.
An Oasis of Calm – Caroline – August 2021
We are just back from a week’s stay at Colleton Hall and cannot recommend it highly enough. The Hall is exquisitely furnished and is superbly equipped. Russell and Richard are charming and attentive hosts with nothing too much trouble. The grounds are spectacular with lots of lovely touches including a woodland firepit and seating and picnic areas, and the children had enormous fun on the lake, in the boat and on paddleboards. We weren’t sure whether staycationing in Devon this year was going to be too hectic but Colleton Hall is situated away from the crowds and is an oasis of calm. There is a good choice of places to eat out and we didn’t have one disappointing meal whilst we were in the area. Our group was a mix of ages from 6-50, plus one dog and we all had a wonderful time so there is definitely something for everyone. Thank you for a memorable holiday.
Beautiful Interiors, Gorgeous Grounds – Luc L August 2021
We’re just returned from a week at Colleton Hall and would recommend it to anyone. From arrival our hosts were fantastic, going above and beyond to help us settle in and across the week helping us with planning day-trips and answering any question we had. The house has beautifully designed interiors, spacious bedrooms, comfortable beds and seemingly every little thing we could possibly require on a holiday; their attention to detail is perfect. Outside, the grounds are gorgeous, with boats, canoes and paddle-boards on the lake, deer roaming the field, ducks wandering freely and wonderful walks to be had across their private fields and forests surrounding the house.
Lovely Stay – Sunil P August 2021
We had a lovely stay at Collerton Hall. Richard and Russell were very hospitable and generous. Everything was cleaned very, very well and they left lots of condiments and snacks for us, which was very kind of them. Perfect house in the perfect setting. Sonos speakers and the amazing dining room were particular highlights!!
High Quality Property to Deliver a Special Experience – Steve M August 2021
Our weekend in Colleton Hall had been much anticipated after being cooped up during lockdown and didn’t disappoint. Indeed, our excitement had been heightened by Russell contacting us in advance to make sure we were able to get the best out of the property. We used the hall to mark a notable family event with 3 generations and had an experience that will live long in the memory. We were very impressed by the range and quality of all the facilities, both inside and out, giving both young and old plenty to do. A lot of time was spent in or on the lake and the lovely outdoor space allowed us to have an excellent BBQ in the pleasant evening sunshine while watching deer prancing across the field and bats flitting around.
The rooms were all beautifully appointed, comfortable and scrupulously clean. The library/dining room was a perfect setting for the celebratory meal we had, made all the better by the excellent local caterers recommended by Russell.
In the short time we were there, we couldn’t take advantage of everything on offer despite our best efforts. eg we had to leave the healthy looking produce in the vegetable garden to other guests. We did have one minor issue (a hangover from the previous occupants), but this was dealt with promptly and efficiently as soon as we mentioned it was still causing an issue.
In summary, if you are looking for a high quality property to deliver that special experience, Colleton Hall should be at the top of your list.
Five Stars – Ian M July 2021
We all enjoyed our stay and would give it a five-star review. Russell was a perfect host introducing us, on arrival, to the delights of the Hall and checking up on things while we were there to make certain everything was perfect. The rooms & en-suites were all great and clean for our arrival. Kitchen facilities were first class – we mainly catered for ourselves although a chef came in our last night.
Beautiful Property – Adrian S June 2021
When we arrived, we were greeted with flowers, chocolate and champagne and we were given a lovely tour of the house and explained the extensive features. The property was beautiful – both inside and out. It has fantastic grounds – especially the lake with its own ducks and duck house. We enjoyed using the rowing boat on the lake one afternoon and there are benches around the lake which make an ideal spot for an early evening aperitif. Russell assured us that we could swim in the lake, but unfortunately the weather never really got hot enough, otherwise I would have definitely gone for a dip. The grounds encompass a terrace and informal English garden with roses, poppies and other flowers with a lovely lawn leading down to a stream with a bridge to a playing field and a lake and then up towards a wildflower meadow and two enormous old oaks. There is a copse to the left of the old oaks in which there are two enormous picnic tables and a fire-pit. There is a big gas barbeque on the terrace and another fire-pit. A number of nights we ate on the patio and then lit the fire-pit to stay up talking. Nature – the grounds are very sympathetic to the environment and the two fields were covered in beautiful wildflowers (buttercups, clover etc) – we saw a wide range of birds (from gold tits all the way up to the Devon Buzzard) and deer ran through the meadow. The dawn chorus in the morning was amazing. There is a stream and bluebell dell which is very peaceful. If you are feeling more active, you can visit the large private wood, which has a picnic area by the stream. We booked a nature walk with a local conservationist and this was excellent. It really allowed us to appreciate the land and its stories. Inside the house has been lovingly and meticulously renovated to a very high standard. There is wonderful art on the walls, a large library, and an in-tune baby grand piano. The main bedroom is enormous, and the en-suite has a standalone bath with views over the gardens – ideal for a soak after all the walking. The other bedrooms are similarly lovely – each is en-suite either with a shower or bath – and each has its own decorative theme. There are several TVs and a Sonos system throughout. The wifi is good and stable – some of our friends had to do a few conference calls, but had no problems. It’s a great place if you enjoy cooking/eating and entertaining. There are two kitchens both with large cookers – two fridges, two wine fridges, two dishwashers and a big freezer. There is everything you could need in terms of pots, pans and utensils and a great fancy bean-to-cup coffee machine with a lot of features and functions – but most importantly makes a great cup of coffee. The dining table seats 18, with a good range of quality glasses and crockery. When we arrived, there were flowers in every room. Our hosts, Russell and Richard couldn’t have been more welcoming and friendly – they have pretty much thought of everything you could want for a holiday stay and were more than happy to help us if we ran out of anything or couldn’t understand something. All in all, we had an amazing stay and definitely hope to return. 100% rating.
100% approval rating, Geoffrey – May 2021
Colleton Hall is a large and historic property, nicely decorated with art works collected by the pleasant owners who live next door. Acres of lovely rural surroundings, with lots to do and see. For the energetic there’s a lake with paddleboards, and for rainy days there are games, a huge and eclectic selection of books, and a grand piano. We had a post-lockdown family reunion there, with six adults and two children, and all of us gave it a 100% approval rating.
A wonderful week, East Wing, Heather May – 2021
We had a wonderful week away at East Colleton Hall. The place is amazing, beautiful grounds and a very smart house. Russell couldn’t have been more generous or accommodating – he helped to find activities for us to do in Devon with our little children, and left an abundance of goodies in the house for our arrival. He also invited us over for drinks and canapés and gave us a tour of Colleton Hall. His hospitality and generosity were much appreciated and really added to our great week.
Five Star House for a Family Holiday, Tina – May 2021
Our family of 8 adults and 2 children enjoyed a wonderful week at Colleton Hall. Beautiful house and grounds in a scenic location with plenty to do. We were blessed with good weather and had fun on the lake with the boat, canoe, paddle boards and the occasional swim! Our little granddaughter especially loved the ducks. Our grandson made good use of the football pitch and practising his skills with the training cones etc that Russell kindly treated him to. We had plenty of woodland walks and a picnic in the picnic area by the stream. Toasting marshmallows up at the campfire one evening was great fun. We all enjoyed a lovely celebratory meal one evening by Suzie (Relish catering) Russell and Richard are great hosts, extremely friendly and helpful, thank you.
Colleton Hall is a magical place, Simon – April 2021
Colleton Hall is a magical place: the hosts couldn’t have been kinder or more helpful, the house itself is beautiful, and the grounds perfect for a family holiday. There’s lots to do with a pond for paddle-boarding and swimming, woodland to explore, streams to splash about it, a fire pit for marsh-mallow toasting, lovely benches everywhere for sitting quietly… And in front of the house there’s a long south facing terrace that catches the sun all day and is sheltered enough from the wind to have allowed us to eat outside even on chilly days. Perfect – a five star house for a family holiday.
What a fun holiday! Salome – October 2021
What a fun holiday! The older teens enjoyed the woodland walk with the dogs; the younger teenagers loved the rowboat and paddle boarding in the lake; and everyone enjoyed s’mores by the fire. The house was very warm and comfortable despite being so large. Everyone had lots of space to spread out and do their own thing, even though we often ended up hanging out in the awesome kitchen with sofas, views and a cozy fire. The views are incredible, even from the bathtub! It was great to have so much land, the house felt completely private. The weather was very changeable; but still the girls managed to get out on the lake several times and the fires kept us warm and cosy. The owners could not have been more helpful from providing advice about activities (surfing lessons, paddle boarding, mountain biking) to delicious restaurants close by (Masons Arms) and farm shops that delivered scrumptious food (Dart). Not to mention keeping us supplied with logs and fire starters for our constant cosy fires. It is not easy to keep everyone happy but Colleton Hall did exactly that. We will certainly be booking this holiday again. Thank you!
We are missing Colleton already and will definitely be back, East Wing – Ulrike October 2020
We stayed in the East Wing for a week and loved the cosy atmosphere and the great surroundings from the very first moment. Stunning views from each room, carefully selected antiques and paintings, a lovely terrace with barbecue and a running trail in the wood – nothing was missing. Even our son, a passionate fisherman, could stay with his tent at the lake overnight. Russell and Richard are fantastic hosts and made us feel very welcome. Their day trip and restaurant suggestions were great! We are missing Colleton already and will definitely be back.
The House is Amazing, Yogesh – October 2020
Just to say that we got back last weekend from Colleton Hall, and what a lovely experience. The house is pretty amazing, as you well know, very scenic, it was great to chill out just watching the landscape, and if one woke up early enough, the Deer prancing around. Breakfast on the patio gave such a serene feeling. Sitting in front of the fire after the evening meal was charming, but going to the picnic spot, lighting a fire, and toasting Marshmallows took it to another level. Last but not the least were the hosts, Richard & Russell, really a fantastic pair, nothing was too much trouble for them, and they were only too pleased to pop around and fix the timings of the heating, even late in the evening. I think it was R&R which made the experience unique, the icing on the cake so to speak. Thanks all at Olivers as well.
A house of great character, Nigel – October 2020
A house of great character in a lovely secluded setting & very well maintained, spotlessly clean, with the added bonus of two fun and considerate hosts. What a treat to arrive to a restocked drinks fridge, a full larder and flowers!. We spent some time beforehand planning our week and Russell was extremely helpful in making restaurant recommendations and helping arrange mountain biking, horse riding and the never to be missed nature walk with the wonderful Ed. We’re still not sure about what lurks at the bottom of the lake but the younger generation did swim in it!
It Was Perfect, Nicola September 2020
Just wanted to let you know that we had a really great stay at Colleton Hall last week. It was perfect. A great location, beautifully decorated. It was a lovely place to relax and we could quite happily have stayed there all the time but there is also lots to do nearby and we did lots of walking and cycling and went to several National Trust properties. We really enjoyed the lake for swimming in the afternoons with the kayak and paddleboard. What made our stay perfect though was the wonderful hospitality from Russell and Richard who could not have been more welcoming or helpful. A really excellent choice and we will certainly look to stay there again.
Planning our Return! Sandra – September 2020
As a family of 8, our holiday at Colleton Hall could not have been more perfect. We arrived to the warmest of welcomes from Russell and Richard who kindly introduced us to their magnificent property. The location is quite simply stunning, placed in the most beautiful of grounds which are a constant feast for the eyes. Immaculately presented, the hall itself has grandeur, elegance and oozes charm at the same time. Decorated with great style and functionality, we had everything we needed with an abundance of space. Russell provided a wealth of local information prior to our arrival and both he and Richard were available for any queries during our stay. We couldn’t have wished for better hosts! We enjoyed a truly wonderful week and were so sad to leave. We are already planning our return! The Hall is Stunning.
The Hall is Stunning, Briony – August 2020
I just wanted to let you know we had a wonderful week at Colleton Hall. The Hall itself is stunning and it was a privilege to stay there. The views across the garden are beautiful. We spent our time walking in the woods, playing football in the garden and swimming in the lake, as well as relaxing on the loungers. When the rain came, there was everything we needed in the Hall – two kitchens, coffee machine, games, books, Sonos speakers and smart TVs. Russell and Richard were very helpful with regard to advice about local pubs and restaurants and day trips and left the Hall fully stocked with supplies for cooking. We would definitely recommend Colleton Hall as a perfect country holiday home.
Wonderful Time! Geri – August 2020
My family and I had a wonderful time in Colleton Hall. I only wish we could have stayed longer! It is beautifully designed, as it manages to be not only spacious and practical for a large group, but also stylish and homely. The grounds are just stunning, with woodland, fields, the lake, and the garden all for private use. We were very lucky with the weather, although even if it had rained, there is still plenty to do and enjoy. Russell and Richard were the perfect hosts and really made us all feel so welcome right from the start. They provided lots of useful information pre-arrival, answered all my questions in a timely manner, provided a lovely welcome gift and were available to contact throughout our stay to ensure everything ran smoothly (which it did!). I definitely recommend this property and can’t wait to return.
The House has Everything, Julie – August 2020
We had a great holiday at Colleton Hall. The house has everything. We all swam in the beautiful lake and walked everyday in the magical woods. The children loved the boats and paddle board. The kitchen is very well equipped and Russell has thought of everything for a very comfortable holiday.
Exceeded our expectations, Jane – August 2020
Colleton Hall exceeded our expectations from the moment we arrived. We received a very warm welcome from the owners Richard and Russell and the grand tour of the properly did not disappoint. The space is amazing, the views stunning and the lake very refreshing during a heatwave. Not only is the property beautifully decorated, Richard and Russell have worked hard to ensure their guests’ needs are met, and quick to provide for any additional requests. I would highly recommend this beautiful property. We certainly did, hardly leaving the grounds over our week’s stay. Thanks so much for helping with our booking.
Beautiful, Sarah H. – August 2020
We were lucky enough to stay 11 nights at Colleton Hall and it is beautiful. We were a family group of 10 aged from 17 to 81. We all loved it, whether it was due to the beautifully decorated rooms, the ensuite bathrooms, the bbq in the garden, watching the deer or canoeing on the lake, it did not disappoint. We also had many wonderful evenings sitting in the garden with a glass of wine watching the sun go down. The owners Russell and Richard could not do enough to ensure that our stay went perfectly. Even down to tracking down a piece of ginger from a neighbour to ensure our evening meal was not ruined!! We cannot recommend this highly enough. It is a gem and we would love to visit again in the future.
Expectations Beyond Surpassed, Taya E. – July 2020
Looking at the photos of this property online had already raised our expectations but upon arrival those expectations were beyond surpassed. Our stay at Colleton Hall couldn’t have been better. Upon arrival we were taken on a grand tour by the owners Russel and Richard who have exquisite taste and were very friendly and welcoming. From the stunning setting, the never ending grounds, the entertainment for the children, the multiple kitchens to the the attention to detail. We were a group of 17, six adults and 11 kids and we were very comfortable. And above all we were saved by Hannah, the charming housekeeper, who was very accommodating to our needs. Can’t wait to come again.
A stand-out experience in every way, Rawah – July 2020
We’ve stayed in many special properties around the world but Colleton Hall is a stand-out experience in every way. The spacious villa is absolutely stunning, designed with incredible taste and attention to detail. It was a joy to cook, lounge and sleep here, looking out onto breathtaking, endless wilderness. It’s proximity to excellent restaurants made the occasional evening out so pleasurable, and the owners were so attentive and helpful. We would come again and again; it’s one of England’s most beautiful hidden gems for a large group looking for something extraordinary in nature. Stunning!
Brilliant Experience! Mus and Abi December 2020 (East Wing)
We enjoyed a short break at Colleton Hall (East Wing).
We had a wonderful welcome from the hosts when we arrived. The property was well presented and equipped with great attention to detail, including welcome gifts for our children, which helped them to settle in. The grounds are breathtaking and we enjoyed walking in the woods. All in all, a brilliant experience!
Bravo! Suzana – January 2020
We had the pleasure of spending new year at Colleton hall in Devon. From the moment we arrived the owners Russell and Richard couldn’t have been more helpful. They unpacked our grocery shopping – provided us with complimentary chocolates – mince pies and also food basics just in case we had forgotten anything. They took time to give us a guided tour of the well appointed house so there was no possibility of us forgetting where things were. We always were given details about nearby shops – pubs etc. The house itself was decorated to a high standard in all rooms and the kitchen and sitting rooms had absolutely everything you would need for a week/weeks away from home, including plenty of wood for cosy log fires. We have stayed in many properties and we can honestly say that owners of Colleton hall made the holiday for us. We will be returning. Bravo!
Exceeded expectation! Melanie December 2019
I wanted to find the perfect property to celebrate my husband’s 50th Bday, and I was not disappointed. I can honesty say this is the most outstanding property I have ever hired, and it is more like a boutique hotel with the added bonus of being completely private. All of the bedrooms are beautifully comfortable with en suites. The separate East Wing was very helpful for friends who attended without young children, and would be great for older members of the family too who want to avoid any late night noise. It’s child friendly too, as we had ages 1.5yrs+ in attendance. Despite its size (so much living space!) it is very cosy and we didn’t really want to leave. The owners are outstanding hosts, assisting with local suppliers like caterers (highly recommended to make the weekend even less stress-free) and meeting deliveries for us. Once the kids were in bed we were able to enjoy the beautiful dining room for an adults supper and take advantage of the fabulous Bose sound system! There is so much to say about this fabulous home, my advice would be just book it- you won’t be disappointed.
The entire experience exceeded expectations, Vali – November 2019
The entire experience exceeded expectations. It was a stunning house, with plenty of space and facilities, perfect for large groups! The forest, lake and surrounding greenery were a pleasure to walk around as well. Owner, Russell our host was incredibly generous and helpful, always available via text and even stocked the bar full of beers. I highly recommend it and we will be back! Perfect Choice.
Perfect Choice, Ana-Rusila Godden – October 2019
Well Colleton Hall and East Wing was a truly perfect choice for our large family gathering! There were 16 of us (3 x generations) getting together to celebrate my sisters 40th birthday and it really was splendid! Russell & Richard were so helpful leading up to our holiday, letting us know all the things that we do not need to bring with us! Plenty of toilet rolls, condiments, hand soap, shower gels etc which really reduced what we needed to bring along. My grocery shopping was delivered before we all arrived and put away for us! On arrival, Richard and Russell were there to greet us and could not have been friendlier or more welcoming! By the end of the tour of the house we wanted them to stay with us for the weekend! To top it all off, our wonderful hosts left us a magnum of Prosecco, chocolates and some chilled beers… now that’s how to greet guests! The house is beautiful and stylish, yet cosy and comfortable. We will definitely be going back to Colleton Hall. Fantastic Location.
Fantastic Location, Karen – October 2019
It is a lovely property in a fantastic location, beautifully decorated and exceptionally clean. The amazing kitchen was such a sociable space and the separate dining room and lounge were lovely too. Each of the bedrooms were uniquely decorated to a high standard. The grounds and lake were a bonus, and the children thoroughly enjoyed canoeing on the water. The owners couldn’t have been more helpful in the build up to our stay. They recommended local places to visit and even offered to book restaurants on our behalf. We celebrated our father’s 80th birthday and the owners helped us organise the fireworks as a surprise. We would definitely recommend this fabulous property.
Blown away! Daniella – October 2019
My husband booked a trip for our family to Colleton Hall for my 30th birthday, and it was a trip I will always remember. It was nice and easy to get to, and as soon as we arrived, Russell welcomed us in to his beautiful home, and gave us the grand tour. We were blown away by how beautiful the house was, and just how big it was. Russell was so helpful and explained where the best walks were, and how everything in the house worked. It made the stay really enjoyable, because we were made to feel so welcome, and well aquatinted with the house. It is so well equipped, with everything you could need, and more. We have young children, and for them the trip was like Christmas and birthdays rolled into one. Being able to have all their family under one roof, with room to gallop about and things to explore, was really amazing. They loved spotting the deer in the garden, stomping about in their wellies and rain coats, and getting to sleep in bunk beds. And for the older members of our party, they all felt very comfortable and could access everything they needed easily. Like adjusting temperature and everyone having their own bathrooms. Another highlight of the trip was our lunch at ‘The Stag’ pub – as recommended and kindly booked by Russell and Richard. It was so close to the house, and we had a fantastic meal there. The owners were really friendly, and accommodating to our varying dietary requirements. The food was brilliant, and it was really warm and cosy in there. Our family always seemed to congregate in the main kitchen, and there was plenty of space for everyone. Being in there first thing in the morning, with a hot cup of tea, watching the Deer and stag wonder across, was the best way to start the day. We just really loved this trip – and wouldn’t hesitate to book again in the near future. Can’t recommend it enough. Amazing Time!
Amazing Time! Sally – August 2019
We have just returned from a week’s stay at Colleton Hall with an extended family group of 10 people ranging in ages from 7 to 87 and we had the most AMAZING time! We have taken an annual family holiday together in various different locations but always in large houses for the last 15 years and Colleton Hall is without doubt the most spectacular property we have ever stayed in. The house is beautiful – enormous and grand but also cosy and really comfortable. It has been beautifully renovated and the owners have thought of everything – a really well stocked kitchen, pool and table football for the kids, board games for the older generations, sonos throughout the house and a baby grand piano for the musically minded, televisions in every room, beautiful en suite bathrooms – the list goes on! And the grounds are simply stunning – a huge expansive garden which our children adored, a lake with a two man canoe which provided hours of fun and private woodlands which seemed to go on and on – this is the English countryside at its absolute best! The owners are delightful and so so helpful – from booking the (WONDERFUL) local pub (the Stag Inn) for us for a couple of meals during our stay, to unpacking an online supermarket shop, welcoming us with prosecco and chocolates and providing tons of really helpful information about the local area, Russell and Richard couldn’t have done more to ensure that we had a great stay. There is tons to do in the local area – you’re spoilt for choice for beaches within an hour – we had a great day out at Woolacombe beach and loved Knightshayes National Trust house and garden – a fascinating gothic property with glorious grounds with a brilliant maze trail for the children. We also did a circular walk at Tarr Steps – a spectacular nature reserve with an ancient stone bridge in Exmoor – only half an hour away. I cannot recommend this place enough – we will definitely be back! Thank you Russell and Richard for a wonderful holiday.
Wonderful Time, Debra – August 2019
I wanted to let you know that we had a wonderful time at Colleton Hall, a beautiful house which felt like a luxury hotel. In the bedrooms and bathrooms, the attention to detail and care was so clear, they were a delight. The kitchen, dining areas and sitting room were perfect for all our different needs and moods. The large kitchen and pantry were ideal for our group and made cooking and eating together a real joy. In the library there was the joy of a fascinating range of books that could have kept us busy for the whole visit. Around the house we all commented on the artwork, again a fascinating range of styles and artists. The Sonos system in every room was such a bonus, everyone downloaded the app and we had music on tap to meet every taste, which was deeply appreciated by the younger members of our group. The extensive grounds, fields and the woods were ideal for our two dogs, who had a ball as between us we spent hours throwing balls and sticks. The lake and the canoe were well used, an activity which did become a bit competitive for younger members of our group! We were lucky to meet our hosts Russell and Richard, they could not have made us any more welcome. Overall, a fabulous house in a wonderful setting, thank you for helping us discover it. Best Standard We Have Ever Rented.
Best Standard We Have Ever Rented, Marilyn – July 2019
We recently spent a long weekend at Colleton Hall. There were 14 in our party ranging from ages 1 to 92 and everyone had a superb time. The accommodation is both elegant and functional. It has all the sophistication of a large Georgian residence with a sweeping staircase and generous room sizes ,but it has been so tastefully renovated that in terms of modern conveniences you could be renting an up market ultra modern house. Unusually for a holiday rental property, no expense has been spared in the renovations. Everything is in good taste, from the tiles throughout the ground floor, to the fittings in the bathrooms and all three kitchens. My 25 year old nephew said having a bath in the main bathroom overlooking the grounds will be a memory that will stay with him for a long time. The rooms are complemented by the carefully chosen art, many beautiful objects and vases of fresh flowers. And then there are the grounds. All I can say is wow. The lake is magical. The young members of the party, as well as taking the canoe out, had a swim in the lake. We took the opportunity of walking through the woods that are also owned by Colleton and just loved the peace and tranquility. Finally, being greeted by the owners of Colleton, Russell and Richard, in such a warm way set the weekend off to a great start. The fact they left the fridges stocked with beers (which I am sure the youngsters in the party used) as well as top class champagne (which we ensured was not touched) shows just how far they will go to try and give their guests a first class experience. We used the chef from DineIndulge for the meal on the Saturday evening and, this too, was a success. I would definitely recommend Colleton to anyone wanting a large, beautiful and sophisticated house in a rural setting. The consensus was that it was the best standard we have ever rented.
